Winter IS for the Birds

By | February 22, 2017

The Glacier National Park Facebook page says… Winter IS for the birds… (well mostly)! Winter is a great time to observe our over-wintering species like these male Common Goldeneyes. Carefully, shuffling around the icy parking lot in the Apgar Village area of Lake McDonald, I heard chittering and drumming in the trees, even though my focus was the creek. I stayed off the ice on the lake, and after a short tromp through the snow (should have brought snowshoes) down to the creek, I was rewarded! My hope is to go back and find the source of that drumming. I only had to go a short distance to have great wildlife sightings! One last tip… in the cold, keep a spare battery in your warm, down pocket,… just in case.- RT
